Welcome to Year One Classes

Welcome to Year 1!

Year 1 is filled with growth, learning, and new adventures. Curiosity is encouraged, creativity is celebrated, and students are supported in developing greater independence throughout their Year 1 journey. We build upon the EYFS curriculum and routine to ensure there is a smooth transition from EYFS to Year 1.

We will explore a variety of subjects, from reading and writing to mathematics, science and art. Your child will develop important skills and build strong foundations for the years ahead. Through hands-on activities and collaborative learning, we will help each child grow academically, socially, and emotionally. Year 1 is crucial for building on and reinforcing the phonics skills learnt in EYFS. We prepare for the Phonics Screening Check throughout the year by engaging in daily whole-class phonics sessions.

We believe learning should be fun and inspiring, and we’re committed to creating a positive, engaging environment where every child feels confident, valued, and excited to learn.

Home Learning

In Year 1, students can expect short, purposeful homework tasks that help develop the learning taught in class. Homework will include reading (Little Wandle book and a ‘reading for pleasure’ book) and a weekly phonics practice sheet. We also encourage regular practice of number and letter formation to help improve fluency when completing tasks. As the children progress in Year 1, we will use Doodle Maths, an online learning tool, to support their mathematical understanding.

At our school, we are committed to fostering a deep understanding of six concepts: Investigation, Significance, Comparison, Change, Nature, and Humankind. Each term, we focus on one of these Big Ideas, integrating it into our curriculum to support students’ learning journeys throughout their education and beyond.

Our homework projects are designed to reinforce these Big Ideas, creating a cohesive and collaborative learning experience for our entire school community. These projects are open-ended, allowing children to take the lead and present their work in creative and unique ways. We encourage students to explore their own ideas and approaches, celebrating their individuality and innovation.

The projects culminate in opportunities for students to share their work during parents’ evenings, open afternoons, or within their classrooms. This not only showcases their learning but also strengthens our community as we come together to celebrate the diverse and thoughtful contributions of our students.
