Welcome to our Year 2 Classes

In Year 2, we encourage our children to develop their independence for their final year of Key Stage 1 so they are ready for Key Stage 2. Our children build on their previous year’s learning and work hard to link with it to deepen their understanding. They are encouraged to compare and make connections within their learning. In year 2, we cover exciting topics such as Living Things and their Habitats, Beside the Seaside and The Gunpowder Plot, to name a few. Children become scientists, designers, engineers and artists throughout the year and develop their love for learning across all subjects.

Terms/Topic Information

This year’s learning will be based on the topics below and will change accordingly each term. Parents can view a ‘Curriculum Overview’ at the start of each term, informing them about what the children will be learning.

Several times throughout the school year, we come away from our regular timetable and have themed days. This is when the whole school focuses on the same Take One Project and uses a central image, text, song, etc., as the learning stimulus. It allows for and encourages even more creativity and allows us to unite in our learning with the same theme across the whole school. We also have big ideas such as comparison, significance, and investigation. We focus on a different concept each term.

More Information about the subjects can be found on our curriculum pages.

Home Learning

Your whole-school homework tasks for each term are uploaded to Seesaw.

Reading

Children need to read at home every day, ideally with an adult. Your child will take home a book appropriate for their reading level, and we ask that they record a comment each day in their yellow reading journal and return it to school. Reading journals are checked to know how well a child engages with the book. Reading daily is key to improving and supporting phonic knowledge, fluency and comprehension skills.

Online Learning

In addition, logging on to and playing ten minutes of Doodle Maths and Spelling Shed assignments daily will also improve Maths fluency and spelling skills through fun and interactive ways.

From Term 3, we will also set Timetables Rockstars (TTR) to further enhance the recall speed of timetables.

Big Ideas

At our school, we are committed to fostering a deep understanding of six concepts: Investigation, Significance, Comparison, Change, Nature, and Humankind. Each term, we focus on one of these Big Ideas, integrating it into our curriculum to support students’ learning journeys throughout their education and beyond.

Our homework projects are designed to reinforce these Big Ideas, creating a cohesive and collaborative learning experience for our entire school community. These projects are open-ended, allowing children to take the lead and present their work in creative and unique ways. We encourage students to explore their own ideas and approaches, celebrating their individuality and innovation.

The projects culminate in opportunities for students to share their work during parents’ evenings, open afternoons, or within their classrooms. This not only showcases their learning but also strengthens our community as we come together to celebrate the diverse and thoughtful contributions of our students.
